ニューオーリンズ時代の八雲は、黒人たちの集まる酒場や街角、教会などを訪れ、まさにジャズが産声をあげようとしていたころの、黒人たちの音楽を採取して歩いた。このノートには、40ほどのクレオール・ソングが記録されている。

During his years in New Orleans, Hearn visited bars, street corners, and churches of the black community to collect materials on the native music from which jazz was born. There are forty Creole songs gathered from such locations recorded in this note pad.
